History of The Times Newspaper
The
Times newspaper was founded in 1785 by John Walter as The Daily
Universal Register, the title of which after 940 editions was
changed on 1 January, 1788 to The Times. John Walter was also
the first editor of the paper. He resigned in 1803, handing
ownership and editorship to the second John Walter. The first John
Walter had already spent sixteen months in Newgate Prison for libel
printed in The Times newspaper, but his pioneering efforts to obtain
European news, especially from France, helped build the Times
newspaper reputation among policy makers and financiers.
The Times used
contributions from significant figures in the fields of politics,
science, literature, and the arts to build its reputation. For much
of its early life, the profits of The Times newspaper were very
large & the competition minimal, so the newspaper could pay far
better for information & writers. The Times newspaper was
first to send special correspondents abroad, and it was the first
newspaper to send war correspondents to cover conflicts. W. H.
Russell, the paper's correspondent with the army in the Crimean War,
was immensely influential with his dispatches back to England.
In 1981 The
Times and Sunday Times were purchased from Thomson by
Rupert Murdoch's News International. Murdoch soon began making his
mark on the paper, replacing its editor, William Rees-Mogg, with
Harold Evans in 1981. In November 2003, News International began
producing the Times newspaper in both broadsheet and tabloid
sizes. On 13th September 2004, the weekday broadsheet was
withdrawn from sale in Northern Ireland. Since 1 November 2004, the
paper has been printed solely in tabloid format. The certified
average circulation figures for
November 2005 show that The Times sold 692,581 copies per day, the
highest achieved under current Editor, Robert Thomson.
A Brief History of the Sunday Times
The Sunday
Times is a Sunday broadsheet newspaper distributed in the United
Kingdom and Ireland, published by News International, a subsidiary
of News corporation. News International also owns The
Times newspaper and since the 1960's the two have been
part of a company called Times Newspapers Limited, but they were
founded independently and had never been under common ownership
before then.
While its
sister paper, The Times, holds a substantially smaller circulation
than the other main UK quality daily, The
Daily telegraph, The Sunday Times occupies a dominant
position in the Sunday broadsheet market. Other newspapers owned by
News Corp include The Times, The Sun and the News of the world
. News Corp also owns the Fox Network and Sky Television.
Unlike its
daily sister paper, The Times, The Sunday Times has remained
arguably the major Sunday newspaper. It maintains the larger
broadsheet format and has announced that it will continue to
do so.
